Author

In 1849, Muir's Scottish family immigrated to the United States, starting a farm near Portage, Wisconsin, called Fountain Lake Farm. He was 11 years old at the time. The farmstead has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Muir attened UW Madison from 1860-1863. When he left college, he took long walking excursions to study nature, especially plants. In 1867 he made a walking trip from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico to observe the plants, animals and physical features of the country.
